Chindia, the term used by Salzman and Matathia in their book Next Now, has being quoted as one of the remaining market opportunities. Next Now is focused on trying to use market trends to grow investor wealth.
Although Chindia has been grabbing lots of headlines, similar to BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China), the reality appears to be different from the perception. China is definitely suffering from the consumer slowdown across the world. This is most visibly seen by the vast quantity of ships currently being mothballed outside Singapore harbor. Nine months ago there was a desperate shortage of container ships, now China does not appear to need the ships since China’s export market appears to have fallen off a cliff. Further analysis is provided in China The Balance Sheet.
India is in a different situation and seems to have different challenges. It is becoming apparent however that Chindia does not appear to be the big next market opportunity… in the short-term anyway.
