More Thoughts on Gold

Posted by theaccountant December - 28 - 2008 - Sunday

Gold BullionThis time of year always causes us to reflect on the year that is coming to pass. As we all know 2008 has been a very turbulent year and one which has caused massive variations in currencies. These fluctuations in currencies such as the US dollar or the British pound have made and lost investors millions. This has really brought home to me the lack of stability in our major currencies.

Maybe I am just seeing the past with rose tinted glasses, but I can’t stop myself dreaming of distant times when the major currencies were pegged to the gold standard. Nathan Lewis appears to have shared some of these thoughts in his book Gold, which is a wonderful read. In the short-term I think we can safely assume that the future President and future Prime Minister will not be moving to the gold standard, therefore one option the investor may wish to consider is to increase their long-term investments in gold.

With the invention of the web and online gold trading houses this is no longer restricted to the rich investor. Companies such as Bullion Vault purport to offer services to all levels of investor. Independent professional advice should always be taken before making significant investments, however i cannot help feeling that more investors will be returning to the “perceived” stability of gold.
