The End of Student Bank Loans?

Posted by theaccountant September - 21 - 2009 - Monday

Student bank loans continue to be receiving huge press coverage in the UK. The three larges political parties in the UK also appear to be generating even more interest in the student loan business, this is because one of the parties is indicating that student loans should be stopped.

The press are obviously having a field day with this, since it is very difficult to justify extra cost for education when the UK government borrowing is rocketing through the roof. The counter argument is that it is better to invest in the UK future and spend money on investing in the population, rather than the money being spent on benefits to an unemployed workforce.

Obviously this is not as simplistic as these two arguments would imply. The reality is that this is a very difficult and challenging issue. For now it appears that the UK banks, will continue to offer students and parents of students a selection of bank loans.

As somebody who was fortunate enough to have received a free education, I do find it difficult to accept that students need to start their working careers with a sizeable debt and multitude of loans. Surely the population is worth investing in?

What do you think?
