The history of Lloyds TSB Bank is a long and prosperous one. Beginning in 1765, John Taylor and Sampson Lloyd devised a private banking business together situated in Birmingham, England. This successful venture was continued on by the sons of the original partners and became the Lloyds Banking Company. With a number of mergers and transitions over the years, Lloyds TSB has seen over 50 take-overs, expanding in the process with each business change.
Connections with the Wilts and Dorset Bank, Capital and Counties Bank as well as Fox, Fowler and Company are just a few of the industrious mergers that have ocurred in the growth and development of Lloyds TSB Bank. Acquiring the Armstrong and Company in Paris and Le Havre proved to form the Lloyds Bank in France in 1911, which continued to run jointly as Lloyds National and Provincial Bank from the year 1917. After 1955, Lloyds Bank obtained full ownership, eventually evolving into Lloyds Bank Europe.
Lloyds Bank was introduced into South America in 1918 when Lloyds successfully obtained the London and River Plate Bank. Subsequently, the merger of the London and Brazilian Bank became the BOLSA, or the Bank of London and South America. 1971 brought on a merger with the Lloyds Bank Europe that became known as the Lloyds and Bolsa International Bank, with only the name changing in 1974 to Lloyds Bank International, and eventually becoming Lloyds Bank later on in 1986.
Merging the Abbey Life Insurance Company with five of Lloyds’ businesses in 1988, Lloyds Abbey Life was formed. Lloyds Bank continued to have a commanding presence, with offices in over 30 countries by the early 1990′s with the Cheltenham & Gloucester Building Society joining the ranks of the Lloyds Bank Group in 1995. By the end of 1995, Lloyds merged with the TSB Group to form what is now known as Lloyds TSB Group.
