The History of the Bank of Hawaii (BoH)
The Bank of Hawaii, a subsidiary of the Bank of Hawaii Corporation began life in 1897 as the Bishop Trust and throughout the twentieth century the Bank of Hawaii has forged a name for itself on the acquisition trail.
The Bank of Hawaii’s Early Pacific Expansion (BoH)
By 1930 the Bank of Hawaii had acquired the Bank of Maui, thus creating the previous component parts of the First National Bank of Paia, Lahaina National Bank, First National Bank of Wailuku, together with a branch in Kauai. After 1959 the bank then proceeded to open its first Pacific Island branches in Kwajalein, Pulau, Guam, Yap, Ponape and Kosrae.
The Bank of Hawaii’s expansion throughout the Pacific include the acquisition of the Bank of American Samoa in 1969 (the bank which the US Navy had created in 1914).
The Bank of Hawaii’s latter 20th Century Global Growth
In 1969 the bank took its first steps into the broader global banking world with the creation of the Banquede Nouvelle Caledonie in Noumea. This was a joint venture with the French owned bank Credit Lyonnais.
The bank also took global steps by opening a branch in Tokyo, merging with Hawaiin Trust Company and acquiring First National Bank of Arizona (1989), FirstFed America (1990) plus a series of other Pacific based acquisitions. The bank also made other share purchases into such banks as the Bank of Queensland.
The Bank of Hawaii’s (BoH’s) 21st Century Operations
The twenty first century has seen the BoH take a strategic decision to focus on its core Hawaiin and West Pacific markets. This decision has resulted in the bank offloading a selection of its various banking investments across the global market.
Where the bank has been unable to sell its various investments the bank has taken the decision to close down a selection of branches.
