History of Goldman Sachs Bank U.S.A.

The company was founded in 1869 by Marcus Goldman, an immigrant from Germany. Goldman’s son-in-law joined the company, named Samuel Sachs, thus the name of the company. The company was invited to join the New York Stock Exchange in 1906, due its profound work pioneering commercial paper for entrepreneurs. Goldman Sachs Bank U.S.A. was one of the first companies to heavily recruit people who graduated with MBA degrees from the leading business schools around the country. This practice is still in use today.

The firm’s reputation was hurt after the Stock Market Crash of 1929 when it launched the Goldman Sachs Trading Corp. When Sidney Weinberg became the new senior partner in 1930, he helped restore the company’s reputation. He did this by turning the focus of Goldman Sachs Bank U.S.A. away from trading and towards investment banking. But, in 1969, Gus Levy turned to company’s focus back towards trading when he took the place of Weinberg. The company’s life and capital was threatened in 1970, when the Penn Central Railroad Company went bankrupt, losing about $80 million, with most of the commercial paper issued by Goldman Sachs Bank U.S.A.

In the early 1970s, the company expanded to London with its first international office. Also, the company started a private wealth division, as well as a fixed income division. Then, in 1976, the company initiated 14 business principals, created by Co-Senior partners John Weinberg and John C. Whitehead, which are still used today. From 1980 to 1999, the Goldman Sachs Bank U.S.A. acquired many other companies from all over the world that joined their divisions. In 1990, the company pledged to focus on the Merger & Acquisition and Trading business lines because of the Co-Senior Partnership of Robert Rubin and Stephen Freidman.

The Goldman Company went public with 48% of its company in 199, which was one of the largest events in the company’s history.
