The Finance Owl

Banks – Loans – Mortgages – Money

As the largest credit union in the state of Iowa and with a reputation as one of the top credit unions in the US, there are lots of reasons why people would be interested in the Veridian Credit Union.

Veridian Credit Union is a modern, full-service financial institution. Like all credit unions, Veridian is owned by its members and has a great deal to offer someone who successfully applies for membership.

History of the Veridian Credit Union

The John Deere Employees Credit Union was formed in Waterloo, Iowa during the Great Depression in 1934. It was made up of John Deere employees who wanted to move away from dependency upon the more profit-minded commercial banks and finance houses.

Some fifty or so years later, Veridian expanded its business to other members of the community (i.e. non-employees of John Deere), and to reflect this the name of the CU was changed to the John Deere Community Credit Union of Waterloo. In 1986, the credit union expanded again to open up membership to the neighboring town of Cedar Falls, facilitating another small rebranding exercise. This time it was renamed the John Deere Community Credit Union.

However, the various incarnations of the “John Deere” titled credit union had always operated independently of the company that it was named after so in 2006 the name was changed yet again to avoid trademark confusion. This is when the JDCCU became the Veridian Credit Union, complete with a new and distinct logo.

Eligibility and Membership to Veridian

One of the ways that credit unions work is to limit membership to maintain service levels and healthy money management practices. In this respect Veridian Credit Union is no exception.

You may become a member of Veridian if you live or work in Allamakee, Benton, Black Hawk, Boone, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Cedar, Cerro Gordo, Chickasaw, Clayton, Dallas, Delaware, Fayette, Floyd, Franklin, Grundy, Hardin, Iowa, Jasper, Johnson, Jones, Linn, Louisa, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Muscatine, Polk, Poweshiek, Story, Tama, Warren, Washington, and Winneshiek Counties. People who are employed by any Veridian Credit Union business partners (either current employees or retired) are also eligible, as are their immediate family. Individuals with disabilities, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, who live in Iowa state are also eligible.

Finally it is worth noting that even if the conditions under which you became a member change (for example, if you change jobs or move away from a qualifying area) you will not need to close your account: Veridian CU’s mantra is “Once a member, always a member”.
